Proudly providing the communities of Western Victoria with opportunities to participate in indoor sports for over 40 years, Basketball Ballarat has grown and developed over this time into the organisation it is today.

In 2020 they boast a diverse and growing business which operates competitions across a range of sports for people of all ages, a successful hospitality business, a range of community programs and elite teams participating in national competitions that attract athletes from around the world. These current programs see 8,500 users interact with Basketball Ballarat each week.

The organisation has recently moved into a state of the art $24 million 8 court indoor sports precinct, which once the external $5.2M stage two is completed will also boast a café, bistro / sports lounge, commercial gym, consulting suites and 4 outdoor 3on3 basketball courts. They also retain private ownership of an additional 4 court venue which incorporates a licensed club and bistro.

The role

With 4 direct reports, leading a team of 55 staff and working with over 500 volunteers you will have an opportunity to create a new era of indoor community sports for Western Victoria while maximising opportunities across other business units including events, hospitality and health & fitness.

With a focus on strategic development and leadership, this role will see you identify opportunities to further expand and diversify the programs and services offered, while ensuring chances to improve and enhance the experiences of members and partners are maximised.

As CEO you will be focused on stakeholder engagement with the support of an experienced and engaged board. You will maintain and further develop relationships with local, state and federal government, commercial partners, key local community members and members within the clubs and community groups that utilise the services Ballarat Basketball delivers.

You will also be responsible for the financial oversight of the organisation. Working with the support of the external accountant and board treasurer you will prepare and manage budgets, cashflow and forecasting to ensure a sound financial position is maintained.

Requirements of this role;

  • A relevant tertiary qualification
  • Comparable experience in leadership role
  • A strong understanding of community based organisations ideally in sport
  • Financial and business acumen
  • An understanding and an ability to implement a range of business principles across diverse business units
  • Experience with volunteerism, understanding what is required to successfully manage a business that relies heavily on a large team of passionate volunteers
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and relationship development skills and experience
