Apprenticeships offer young people, especially young women, a fantastic career pathway by enabling them to follow their passion and develop new skills.

Katrina Palmer is an electrical and instrumentation apprentice at the Viva Energy Geelong refinery.

Katrina grew up in Geelong and having finished Year 12 thought about persuing a career in electrical or chemical engineering. Katrina hadn’t considered a trade until she stumbled upon an advertisement for the Viva Energy apprenticeship in the local newspaper.

Through the Viva Energy apprenticeship, Katrina has discovered that she is much more capable than she realised and having recently been awarded ‘Apprentice of the Year’ by the Apprenticeship Employment Network, hasn’t looked back.

Katrina loves the variety of work, the hands-on learning and the fact that she is mentored by people who have a wealth of industry experience.

In 2017 Viva Energy supported Katrina with time off to compete in the WorldSkills National Championships in Sydney, where she was up against 400 of Australia’s best tradespeople for the title of National Champion.

Katrina has also been involved with the Geelong Women in Trades group, where she flew to Cambodia with a team of young women to build a house for a rural family in need.

Viva Energy want to encourage more young people like Katrina to become trades people, so if you’re interested, like Katrina say’s, “just have a go and enjoy it”.
